First Place Again

Ryan Howard may be powering the Phillies through another strong September, but tonight his go-ahead dinger wasn't enough to keep the Phils afloat in the NL East.

The New York Mets, powered by another lead off home run by Jose Reyes, have once again re-claimed first place, and hopefully they plan to stay this time.

The player of the game tonight, in VFC's opinion was rookie Daniel Murphy who banged out a pinch hit double to score two and cemented the third consecutive win for the Mets.

Odalis Perez was shaky, as usual, but he kept his head above water long enough to give the bats a chance to perform, and that they did.

Both the Marlins and the Braves appear rejuvenated by playing the playoff spoiler to the Mets and Phils, and that will make these last 12 games a playoff race for the ages.

Pedro takes the mound tomorrow night, which shouldn't make any Met fan comfortable, but the Met bats are rolling right now, and they hit Campillo pretty good last Sunday before the bullpen blew the game at Shea.

For those waiting for another New York Met collapse, look no further than Jose Reyes. Last year he was a non player for the last month, but this September he's the catalyst that has set the table for the last few wins. He's stealing bases and hitting homers while Delgado (MVP) and Beltran are there to drive him in.

And don't forget Wright, recent woes aside, that guy has been there all year long.

The next two weeks could be two of the most intense weeks in Met history. The last season at Shea should be remembered with a first place team, something the cross-town Yankees couldn't bring to Yankee stadium for the last time.

It's fitting that the Braves give the Mets so much trouble the last few weeks, because in between the Cardinals of the eighties and the Phills of the new century, the Braves pestered the Mets for years. We knew they wouldn't roll over during this race, no matter how many games out of first they are.

But are they enough to keep the Mets from reaching the playoffs?

VFC doubts it.
