The Bullpen Tried to Make it Interesting Again, But the Mets Pull it Off

The New York Mets offense provided enough tonight to keep the bullpen from blowing this one, despite their valiant attempt to do so, behind another strong outing from Johan Santana, who hasn't lost in fourteen starts.

The Mets Wild Card lead stretched to 1 1/2 games ahead of the Brewers who lost a hearthbreaker to Chicago.

The Phillies beat the Braves to remain on top of the NL East by a half game.

The Mets travel to Atlanta in their attempt to regain the division lead, while Phillie heads to Florida. Atlanta gave the Mets trouble at Shea last weekend, and the Mets hope to return the favor by taking the series in Atlanta.

Reyes continued his hot hitting tonight, ignoring reports that he's dating a model during road trips, and the Carlos' each contributed a key hit to tonight's victory.

The real story was Johan Santana once again earning his money, taking a shutout into the seventh.

The Mets should at least have the Wild Card spot in the playoffs after the Brewers' recent collapse, but the race for the division should be a tight one. Delgado and Howard will spend the last two weeks of the season competing for the NL MVP award, and the team that takes the division will probably dictate who wins the award.

My bets are on Delgado.
